Short answer
A complete packaging RFQ states the box style, internal dimensions, quantity, board and paper, printing, finishes, insert, accessories, delivery country and target date. With those ten details a factory can quote accurately in one round instead of three.
Why most first quotes are wrong
Packaging prices swing with size, board, finish and insert. When an inquiry says only "custom box with logo, price?", the supplier has to guess — and you get either a vague range or a number that changes after sampling. Ten facts fix that.
The ten details a supplier needs
- Box style. Magnetic, lid and base, drawer, collapsible, mailer, advent, LCD video. A reference photo or a link to a product page is ideal.
- Internal dimensions in mm: length × width × height of the space the product needs.
- Quantity — ideally two or three tiers (for example 500 / 1,000 / 3,000) so you can see the price curve.
- Board and paper, or simply the feel you want: "sturdy", "very premium", "lightweight".
- Printing: CMYK, Pantone, number of colours, inside print or not.
- Finishes: lamination type, foil, emboss, spot UV.
- Insert: EVA, foam, card, blister, velvet — and what it must hold.
- Accessories: ribbon, handle, magnets, window.
- Delivery country and terms: EXW, FOB or DDP.
- Target date for goods in hand.
Measuring internal dimensions
Measure the product (or the product in its inner packaging) at its widest points and add clearance: about 1–2 mm per side for a fitted insert, 3–5 mm per side for loose items with tissue. Always give inside dimensions; the factory adds board thickness to calculate the outside.
Use the box size helper on our contact page to convert inner size to outer size and estimate shipping weight.
